President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has issued Executive Order Number 2 renaming the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) to Office of the Press Secretary (OPS).,The EO, which was signed on 30 June but only released by the Palace on 6 July, also ordered the abolition of the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson, and the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office.,It also stated that the Office of the Secretary shall have an Assistant Secretary, with support staff of not more than 20 personnel to be designated by the Press Secretary, and approved by the Executive Secretary.,In addition, the EO also authorized the designation of undersecretaries for the Operations, Plans and Policies; Administration, Finance and Procurement; Legal Affairs; Media Accreditation and Relations; Digital Media Services; Print Media Services, and related GOCCs and attached agencies; and Broadcast Media Services, and related GOCCs and attached agencies.,Among the powers and functions given to the OPS are to pronounce, on behalf of the President, matters pertaining to his actions, policies, programs, official activities, and accomplishments; develop and implement necessary guidelines and mechanisms pertaining to the delivery and dissemination of information on policies, programs, official activities, and achievements of the President and the Executive Branch.,“All existing divisions and units of the PCOO shall be organized and reorganized under the areas of concern of the undersecretaries of the OPS,” the EO stated.,“All redundant positions, divisions, and units, as may be determined by the OP, shall be abolished,” it added.,To recall, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III changed the name of the OPS as PCOO in 2010, and redefined its functions.
